Pentaho Community Dashboard (CDE) Basics

Recently, I was working on CDE dashboard and I am unable to find a suitable document on the Pentaho CDE Dashboard. I started to think why I couldn’t write my own blog on CDE which could help people who spend too much time on finding a document on CDE but unfortunately couldn’t find any promising document.

Here I am presenting my first blog. I hope it will be useful for someone.

Introduction about CDE:
  • CDE means Community Dashboard Editor is very power tool that allows the creation of dashboard.
  • Specifying a set of data source components to connect to the data to be visualized.
  • Creating the visual components, connect them to data and assign them to the lay-out grid and defining some more flexibility by parameterizing components

 1 UI Overview:
The CDE Dashboard editor is broken into various sections. The main sections are Layout,
Components, Data Sources and Preview.

 1.1 Layout
The Layout section is the main area that we use to define our Dashboard structure. Here we
add rows and columns to our layout as well as other basic layout visual items, HTML, Images,
Text.
We also add CSS and JavaScript resources to our dashboard in this section.

1.2 Components
The Components section contains all the nuts and bolts of our dashboard. Here we can add
Parameters, selectors, charts and various other components. A majority of these components
will require a Data Source.

1.3 Data Sources
In this section we define Data Source for use with our CDE components. We have a large list of
possible Data Sources depending on where you need to get your data from.

1.4 Preview
The preview Item is not a UI section but instead a simple button that will preview our
development dashboard as we create it. Before you can preview a dashboard, you must save it.

Hope this post helps someone and feel free to give comments and suggestion
